MUSD Re-Screening of K–2 Students Incomplete as CDE Deadline Passes — District Declines to Confirm Compliance
The California Department of Education ordered MUSD to re-screen all kindergarten through second grade students with a state-approved instrument by June 1, 2026. DFP can confirm the re-screening was not complete as of May 30.
<p><strong>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE</strong><br>June 2, 2026<br>Contact: newsroom@dismalfreedompress.org</p><p>Manteca Unified School District has not confirmed compliance with a CDE order requiring it to re-screen all kindergarten through second-grade students with a state-approved reading instrument before the end of the 2025–26 school year, according to a DFP inquiry submitted to the district on May 27.</p><p>The district's communications office acknowledged receipt of DFP's inquiry but did not respond to questions about completion status, the number of students re-screened, or which state-approved instrument was used. MUSD Superintendent Clark Burke did not respond to a direct phone message.</p><p>CDE's April 3 non-compliance letter, obtained by DFP through a CPRA investigation, ordered MUSD to use an instrument from the state's approved list under Ed. Code § 53008. As of May 30, DFP has not been able to confirm any public notice, board agenda item, or administrative communication indicating the re-screening was completed.</p><p>DFP has submitted a follow-up CPRA request for all district communications related to the re-screening effort since April 3, 2026. The district's statutory response deadline is June 18.</p><p>###</p>
